Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings (OSEU) are educational standards developed by Oceti Sakowin Elders and educators to ensure students learn the history, culture, language, values, and contemporary experiences of the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota people. Rapid City Area Schools has integrated the OSEU into instruction as part of its commitment to providing culturally responsive education, honoring the heritage of the region's first peoples, and creating learning environments where all students feel seen, valued, and connected. Through the Office of Indian Education and School Improvement, OSEU-aligned curriculum, professional learning, and classroom resources help educators embed Indigenous perspectives across all grade levels and subject areas, strengthening both academic achievement and cultural understanding.

To support this work, Rapid City Area Schools has designated Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings (OSEU) Leads in schools across the district. These teacher leaders provide ongoing coaching, classroom modeling, instructional resources, and professional support to fellow educators, helping them confidently integrate the OSEU into daily instruction. By building capacity at each school, OSEU Leads ensure that Indigenous perspectives are thoughtfully and authentically incorporated into the curriculum on a continual basis, enriching learning for all students.
