Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings (OSEU)

Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings (OSEU) are educational standards developed by Oceti Sakowin Elders and educators to ensure students learn the history, culture, language, values, and contemporary experiences of the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota people. These standards promote cultural understanding, respect, and meaningful learning for all students. SD OSEU Standards

Rapid City Area Schools has integrated the OSEU into instruction as part of its commitment to providing culturally responsive education, honoring the heritage of the region's first peoples, and creating learning environments where all students feel seen, valued, and connected. Through the Office of Indian Education and School Improvement, OSEU-aligned curriculum, professional learning, and classroom resources help educators embed Indigenous perspectives across all grade levels and subject areas, strengthening both academic achievement and cultural understanding.

To support this work, Rapid City Area Schools has designated Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings (OSEU) Leads in schools across the district. These teacher leaders provide ongoing coaching, classroom modeling, instructional resources, and professional support to fellow educators, helping them confidently integrate the OSEU into daily instruction. By building capacity at each school, OSEU Leads ensure that Indigenous perspectives are thoughtfully and authentically incorporated into the curriculum on a continual basis, enriching learning for all students.

On August 5, 2026, OSEU Lead Teachers participated in a collaborative professional development day focused on strengthening implementation of the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings (OSEU) through curriculum alignment, resource updates, and culturally responsive teaching practices. Participants reviewed program expectations, reporting procedures, updated instructional resources, lesson development, and implementation planning for the 2026–2027 school year.

A highlight of the day was a visit to the Rapid City Indian Boarding School Memorial Site, where Executive Director Amy Sazue shared the site's history and significance, reinforcing the importance of Indigenous perspectives in education. During the afternoon, teachers worked in Elementary Literacy and Middle/High School Social Studies OSEU Alignment Work Groups to refine pacing guides and strengthen alignment of OSEU standards across grade levels, while also participating in individual video interviews about OSEU implementation. The day concluded with a presentation on Kinship and Lakota Values that emphasized culturally responsive classroom expectations, leaving participants better prepared to support meaningful and consistent OSEU instruction throughout the district.
